The Blue Mountains

Well I have ticked one more thing off my to do list, I spent this weekend up in the Blue Mountains, this is an area bout 90 mins drive out of Sydney with stunning views, fresh air a plenty and the perfect place for a valentines weekend away.

I had booked us into a lovely hotel called Lilianfels which is apparently the only five star hotel in the Blue Mountains, it was lovely! The room was slightly bigger than our North Sydney apartment and the bed was only slightly smaller than our entire bedroom, the staff were friendly and attentive and we enjoyed our stay immensely.

We visited Scenic World on the Saturday which is a place where they have a horizontal cable car that traverses a valley with amazing views of a waterfall and the famous three sisters and orphan rock formations. It even has a clear glass floor section for the more adventurous so you can look straight down to the valley bottom over 200m below you. There is also the world’s steepest railway that is more like a roller coaster than a train that takes you down into the valley below. A stroll around the rain forest at the valley bottom was then followed by a ride back up in a more conventional up-down cable car. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon and I recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in or around Katoomba.

After a little shopping on the local high street to buy swimmers, as I had forgotten to pack any, it was back to the hotel for a quick dip in the pool then a lovely dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. We drove back to Sydney on the Sunday morning and headed out for the evening with friends to see Fools Gold at the cinema. This is a perfect Sunday evening film as it requires very little mental commitment to keep up with the plot but is entertaining enough to keep your eyes open throughout.

It was a great weekend but now it is back to work again for the week, next weekend holds the promise of ticking the Sydney Tower off my to see list and who knows what else I can squeeze in?

Hi Andy

Having been to Sydney several times I just wanted to say that as an alternative, or in addition, to the Tower I can highly recommend Australia Square. Fabulous views especially around sunset with revolving restaurant and great cocktails and nibbles (you don't have to have a meal). Also Bridge climb is great on a sunny day and not at all strenuous.
